The Sacred West: Dwarka, Somnath & Gir Retreat

Overview

This 4-night, 5-day journey through the heart of Gujarat’s Saurashtra region is a perfect blend of deep-rooted spirituality and raw natural beauty. Starting and ending in Rajkot, the itinerary covers the "Land of Legends," featuring two of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, the ancient kingdom of Lord Krishna in Dwarka, and the final refuge of the Asiatic Lion in Sasan Gir. This circuit is designed for travelers seeking a comprehensive experience of India’s western heritage, coastal history, and iconic wildlife.

Day 1: Arrival and Cultural Heritage of Rajkot

Upon arrival in Rajkot, once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra, you will check into your hotel to begin your exploration of this historic city. The day focuses on Rajkot's pivotal role in Indian history and its vibrant culture. You will visit Kaba Gandhi No Delo, the childhood home of Mahatma Gandhi, which now serves as an insightful museum. This is followed by a visit to the Watson Museum, located in the lush Jubilee Garden, which houses a rare collection of artifacts from the Harappan civilization and local royal history. Later, explore the unique Rotary Dolls Museum, featuring a vast collection of dolls from across the world. The evening concludes with a visit to the stunning BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a masterpiece of hand-carved pink stone, to witness the peaceful evening prayer. Overnight stay in Rajkot.

Day 2: Journey to the Kingdom of Lord Krishna (Dwarka)

After breakfast, you will drive westward to the sacred coastal city of Dwarka, the legendary capital of Lord Krishna. After checking in, the afternoon is dedicated to a high-value spiritual circuit. You will first visit the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, home to one of the 12 self-existent Shiva shrines and marked by a majestic 80-foot Shiva statue. Next, you will visit Gopi Talav, the sacred pond where the Gopis are said to have met Krishna, followed by a ferry ride from Okha port to Bet Dwarka. This island is believed to be the original residence of Lord Krishna and offers a serene atmosphere for prayer. On your return, visit the intricately carved Rukmini Devi Temple. The day reaches its spiritual peak in the evening as you attend the Sandhya Aarti at the world-famous Dwarkadhish Temple, a five-storied architectural marvel on the banks of the Gomti River. Overnight stay in Dwarka.

Day 3: Coastal Drive via Porbandar to Somnath

Today’s journey takes you south along the scenic coastline toward Somnath. En route, you will stop at Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Here, you will visit Kirti Mandir, the three-story ancestral house of the Mahatma, and the nearby Sudama Temple, the only temple in the world dedicated to the friendship between Krishna and Sudama. Upon arrival in Somnath, check-in and visit the Bhalka Tirth, where Lord Krishna is said to have departed for his heavenly abode, and the Triveni Sangam, the holy confluence of three rivers. The evening is reserved for the magnificent Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple, known as the "Shrine Eternal." After a powerful Darshan, you will witness the captivating Light and Sound Show, which narrates the temple's resilient history against the backdrop of the roaring Arabian Sea. Overnight stay in Somnath.

Day 4: Into the Wild at Sasan Gir

After a morning visit to the Somnath beach or a final temple visit, you will drive toward Sasan Gir, the only natural habitat of the Asiatic Lion in the world. After checking into your jungle resort, the highlight of the day is the Gir Jungle Safari (subject to advance booking). Accompanied by a naturalist, you will venture into the rugged, dry deciduous forests to spot the majestic lions, leopards, and various species of deer and birds. If the main safari is unavailable, you will visit the Devalia Safari Park, a fenced interpretation zone that guarantees sightings and provides deep insight into the Gir ecosystem. The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy the tranquil and serene atmosphere of the jungle resort. Overnight stay in Sasan Gir.

Day 5: Heritage Stops and Departure from Rajkot

On your final day, you will drive back toward Rajkot to conclude your journey. Depending on your departure time, you may take a short detour to Junagadh to witness the ancient Uperkot Fort and the stunning Mahabat Maqbara. Alternatively, you can stop at Virpur to visit the famous Jalaram Bapa Temple or visit the Vintage Car Museum in Gondal, which showcases the royal collection of the Maharaja of Gondal. Finally, you will be transferred to Rajkot Airport or Railway Station for your onward journey, marking the end of your comprehensive tour of Gujarat's most iconic sites.
