Overview
ambitious
6-day itinerary is a comprehensive journey across the spiritual, historical,
and scenic heartland of Maharashtra, starting and ending in the cosmopolitan
city of Mumbai. The tour is designed for the devout traveler, linking
four of the state’s most revered pilgrimage sites: the holy abode of Shirdi
Sai Baba, the powerful Shani temple at Shani Shingnapur, and three
of the twelve revered Jyotirlinga shrines—Trimbakeshwar, Grishneshwar, and
Bhimashankar. Logistically, the tour includes two exceptionally long travel
days where driving and sightseeing are merged into a single marathon schedule
to cover the vast distances. Highlights also include the historical grandeur of
Aurangabad and the refreshing hills of Lonavala. This package is
intense and requires an early start each morning, but promises a rich blend of
spiritual fulfillment and regional exploration.
Itinerary
Day
1: Arrival and The City of Dreams (Mumbai) Upon arrival at Mumbai Airport or Railway Station,
you will be transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, embark on a tour of
South Mumbai. Visit the iconic Gateway of India, the majestic arch
overlooking the Arabian Sea, and the adjacent Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
Next, take a drive along the picturesque Marine Drive, often called the
Queen's Necklace, and admire the colonial architecture around the Chhatrapati
Shivaji Terminus (CST). You can spend the evening exploring the bustling
lanes and markets of Colaba before retiring for your overnight stay in Mumbai.
Day
2: Jyotirlinga and The Saint’s Abode (Mumbai to Shirdi via
Nashik/Trimbakeshwar)
Today requires an extremely early start (recommended 5:00 AM) as you embark on
a long spiritual transfer day. Your first major stop is Trimbakeshwar,
home to one of the twelve Shiva Jyotirlingas. Perform Darshan at this ancient
and holy temple. Afterward, drive to Nashik for a brief view of the Panchvati
area on the banks of the Godavari River. Following lunch, continue your drive
to Shirdi. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and proceed immediately
for Darshan at the Shri Sai Baba Samadhi Mandir. You may opt to attend
the evening Dhoop Aarti to experience the profound spiritual atmosphere
of the temple, followed by your overnight stay in Shirdi.
Day
3: Three Temples and Caves (Shirdi to Aurangabad) Start your morning with Shirdi
sightseeing, including a visit to Dwarkamai (the mosque where Sai Baba
lived) and Chavadi. After breakfast, check out and drive to Aurangabad.
Your afternoon is dedicated to exploring the historical and spiritual richness
near Aurangabad. You will first visit the revered Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga
Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Directly after Darshan, proceed to
the adjacent Ellora Caves (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to explore the
magnificent rock-cut temples. Depending on time, you may also visit the
striking Bibi Ka Maqbara (Deccan Taj) before settling in for your
overnight stay in Aurangabad.
Day
4: The Marathon of Faith (Aurangabad to Lonavala via Shani Shingnapur &
Bhimashankar)
This is the most demanding travel day and requires a very early 6:00 AM start.
Your first spiritual stop is Shani Shingnapur, the unique village where
the temple has no roof and houses are traditionally without locks, dedicated to
the planet Saturn. After Darshan, you embark on the long, scenic, and arduous
drive towards Bhimashankar, another of the revered Jyotirlinga shrines.
After performing Darshan at the secluded and ancient temple, you will undertake
the final three-hour drive, navigating through the ghats, to the hill station
of Lonavala. Expect a very late arrival and check-in for your overnight
stay.
Day
5: The Scenic Western Ghats (Lonavala)
After the previous day's marathon drive, enjoy a dedicated day of relaxation
and sightseeing in the beautiful Western Ghats. Start your day by visiting the
ancient Buddhist rock-cut shrines of Karla Caves (or Bhaja Caves, if
preferred). Spend the afternoon exploring the region's famous viewpoints such
as Tiger Point or Lion’s Point, which offer breathtaking
panoramic views of the valleys below. If the weather permits, you may visit Bushi
Dam or enjoy some time exploring the local Lonavala market. Conclude the
day with a relaxing evening at your hotel, enjoying the cool hill station
climate, followed by your second overnight stay in Lonavala.
Day
6: Leisure and Departure (Lonavala to Mumbai) Enjoy a leisurely morning in Lonavala. Depending on
your flight or train schedule, you may fit in a quick final visit to a
viewpoint or the picturesque Pawna Lake before checking out. In the
afternoon, you will begin the transfer back to Mumbai. You will be dropped off
at the Mumbai Airport, Railway Station, or your desired location in the city by
late evening, concluding your extensive Maharashtra Pilgrimage & Heritage
Circuit.
